Baseball Scores Six in the Seventh to Earn Series Victory at Charleston Southern

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Radford baseball program used a six-run seventh inning Friday afternoon to break a late tie and secure the series victory with a 12-6 win over Charleston Southern.

It was a clean start for Matthew Lefevers on the mound as he worked around a pair of hits with a double play to keep it a scoreless game. In the second, Radford's offense took advantage of early baserunners after Devin Parks singled off a bunt and Noah Toole drew a hit by pitch. A passed ball allowed a run to come in, and Radford led 1-0.

Charleston Southern threatened again in the bottom of the second as the first two batters reached. Lefevers retired three straight from there, though, keeping the 1-0 lead. Patient plate appearances let Radford load the bases in the third as Hunter Keen, Eli Hudgins and Parks all took free bases. A strikeout ended the threat to keep the lead at one.

A pick off allowed Lefevers to toss another empty frame in the bottom of the third. In the top of the fourth, Radford would get its first big inning of the game. After Alex Levesque drew a walk, he came home thanks to a double by Brady Powell to make it a 2-0 game. Back-to-back walks would load the bases and Hudgins had the big swing with a two-run double to double the lead. Nace capped the four-run frame with a sacrifice fly as the Highlanders would lead 5-0.

Over the next three innings, Charleston Southern would slowly chip away at Radford's lead with two runs in the fourth and three in the sixth to tie the game. Lefevers would still finish with a solid stat line of four innings pitched allowing just two runs.

Facing a brand new ball game, Radford responded in a big way in the top of the seventh. Toole, Levesque and Brooks Simpson all reached to load the bases with two outs. A Junho Son single launched Radford back ahead scoring two runs and a fielding error would bring in another. After an RBI single by Hudgins, Breckin Nace fully broke things open with a triple that put Radford ahead 11-5.

Andrew Steinhaus entered in relief in the bottom of the seventh and played a large role in ensuring Radford's win. The seventh went by with minor issue after two hits were wiped by a pair of groundouts. In the eighth, Steinhaus threw a three-up, three-down frame. The Buccaneers would salvage a run back in the bottom of the ninth, but it wouldn't be enough as Radford held on for the 12-6 final.
