Baseball Unable to Complete Sweep at Charleston Southern

CHARLESTON, S.C. – After being able to grab control late in the first two games of the series, the Radford Highlanders baseball team (25-24, 12-12 BSC) came up short in the regular season finale, falling 10-7 to Charleston Southern (29-21, 13-11 BSC) on Saturday afternoon at CSU Ballpark.

Despite the loss, Radford had already secured their spot in the Big South Tournament. The full seeding, bracket, and schedule are set to be released by the conference tomorrow.

A big third inning seemed to give Radford the advantage early. Brady Powell put two runners in scoring position with a one-out double, and Junho Son singled into right to tie the game at 2-2. After a Hunter Keen single, Breckin Nace hit his fifth home run of the season, a three-run blast to right that made it 5-2 Highlanders in the third.

The Buccaneers managed to even the score up by plating three in the fourth inning, but again, Radford responded with the bats. A two-out rally gave Eli Hudgins an opportunity for an infield single that scored Keen to make it 6-5 in the fifth. After Trey Ludy set down the Bucs 1-2-3, Powell added an insurance run in the sixth to bring home Brooks Simpson from third to make it 7-5 in the sixth.

Charleston Southern broke through as they got deeper into the Radford bullpen. Hunter Howard took over in the seventh and failed to record an out by loading the bases on an infield single and two hit batters. Mason Hatcher then hit another batter before giving up a hit and walk that gave the Buccaneers the lead. Charleston Southern's four spot in the seventh made it 9-7 in favor of the hosts. They added an insurance run in the eighth on a wild pitch to make it 10-7. Radford went in order in the ninth, ending what had been a promising game through six.

Nace's three-run homer was the key hit for Radford, as the junior finished 2-for-4 with a team-leading three RBI. Keen was the lone Highlander to score multiple times, going 2-for-5 with a double.

In a game that was patched together by the pitching staff, only Ludy pitched multiple innings without giving up any runs. Howard ended up with the loss, being charged with three runs (all earned) while not getting an out in the seventh. Hatcher allowed all three inherited runners to score, plus two more in his two innings on the bump. Ben Keefe made just his eighth appearance of the season, allowing two runs (both earned) while getting three outs on 23 pitches in the start.
