Baseball Falls to Charleston Southern in Game One, Late Game vs. Longwood Suspended Until Tomorrow Morning

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The Radford baseball team opened the Big South Tournament with a loss to Charleston Southern, 8-5, on Wednesday afternoon. Falling to the losers' bracket, rain forced a stoppage of play in their elimination game against Longwood. The restart of the game will be at 9:00 a.m. tomorrow, with the Highlanders trailing the Lancers 5-0 in the top of the second inning.

GAME ONE
Things did not get off to a great start for Radford ace Raymond Ladd to start postseason play. The Buccaneers hit back-to-back-to-back doubles off the right-hander to take a 2-0 lead after one. Breckin Nace was ready to go though, as the cleanup hitter led off the second inning with a mammoth home run over the center field wall to make it a 2-1 game. The Highlanders got two more on base before the top of the second ended but failed to follow up the home run with more tallies.

Ladd got two outs in the bottom of the second but was pulled after loading the bases and giving up a couple more Charleston Southern runs. Daniel Quintana entered in relief and eventually got out of the inning, but not before a bases-clearing double made it a 7-1 game. Ladd took his first loss of the season, allowing seven earned runs on six hits while just getting five outs.

Junho Son and Hunter Keen led off the third with back-to-back singles, and Radford had an answer coming. Charleston Southern intentionally walked Nace to load the bases, and then walked Noah Toole to force home a run with two gone. Keen later scored on a passed ball, but the Highlanders left two more on the bases, unable to cut into the 7-3 deficit any further.

The Bucs added one more run to make it 8-3 in the third before both teams' pitching staffs settled down in the middle innings. Radford loaded the bases with an Alex Levesque single and two walks in the sixth, but Hayden Henry managed to strike out back-to-back Highlanders to leave them loaded for Charleston Southern. Trey Ludy returned the favor, retiring the side in order in the fifth before stranding two Bucs on base in the sixth. Ludy finished the day with a quiet seventh, giving the Highlanders a chance at a comeback by tossing three scoreless innings in relief.

Brooks Simpson led off the eighth with a walk before a lightning delay stopped play for around an hour. Once the threat had passed, the Highlanders turned up the threat by loading the bases with nobody out. Son managed to make it an 8-4 game by beating out what could have been a double play, and a Keen single into right made it an 8-5 game with two on and just one gone. Carter Richardson walked to load the bases but again the Highlanders left them loaded without getting the tying run across. In the end, Radford left a dozen on base in the contest, not making the most of many opportunities.

Parker Noonan took over after the delay for Ludy, and the freshman stranded a Buccaneer at third to keep the deficit at three. However, Charleston Southern retired Radford in order to end the game in the ninth.

GAME TWO
Matthew Lefevers took the bump to start the elimination game and was roughed up by the Lancers. The sophomore allowed five runs on four hits, including two home runs, to trail 5-0 before the Highlanders got a chance to bat. Radford went 1-2-3 in the first inning before rain forced a stoppage. Joshua Milleville got a pair of outs in the return from the delay in the second before the storms returned. Play will resume in the top of the second tomorrow at 9:00 a.m.
