Baseball’s 2026 Season Comes to End in Big South Tournament

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The Radford baseball program showed fight throughout but wasn't able to overcome a major early deficit and multiple rain delays in their Big South Tournament loss to sixth-seeded Longwood on Thursday.

Radford and Longwood began the elimination game on Wednesday night, but persistent weather forced the game to be postponed to a start early Thursday morning. In the lone inning to be played Wednesday night, Longwood plated five runs to open up a lead.

Delays persisted and pushed the start time of Thursday back a couple hours before the two squads were finally able to get rolling. Longwood's offense stayed hot, though, and scored three more runs in the top of the second to make it an 8-0 deficit early.

The Highlanders got a spark in the bottom of the second as Noah Toole roped a two-run homer to right that cut the disadvantage down to 8-2. Andrew Steinhaus entered in the third and worked around two hit batters and a walk to keep the Lancers quiet. Radford's offense responded in kind and came close to tying the game back up.

Brady Powell walked and Junho Son singled while Hunter Keen reached off a bunt to load the bases for Radford. Eli Hudgins roped an RBI single to center to score Powell while Breckin Nace nearly cleared the bags with a two-run double. Devin Parks kept the hit train rolling with another double that tightened the game at 8-7 where it would hold all the way to the sixth inning.

Steinhaus would work clean innings in the fourth and fifth to keep Radford's comeback hopes alive. The offense wasn't able to break through, though, as Longwood reestablished their lead with a pair of runs in the sixth and four more in the seventh. That broke the game back open in their favor at 14-7.

Radford's offense was held quiet over the final six innings of the game. After Longwood plated three more runs in the top of the ninth, Radford gave Keen a sendoff to remember with a defensive change before the inning ended as the Radford faithful in the stands gave him a standing ovation for an end to his impressive Radford career. The game would eventually end in the Lancers' favor, 17-7.
