A highlander is simply a person living in, or with origins in the Scottish Highlands. What makes this symbolic to Radford University’s campus and community, is that the surrounding area is grounded in the rich heritage and culture of the Scots-Irish. It is also proclaimed that the Blue Ridge Mountains running through the region resemble the Scottish Highlands – home of the Highlanders.
History tells dark-sided stories relating to the various battles between Highlander clans and chieftains, conveyed through movies we all know such as William Wallace, Rob Roy McGregor and, of course, Braveheart featuring Mel Gibson. Hence, a Highlander is often portrayed as a bearded warrior dawning a kilt with a tartan plaid representing their family or clan. The Radford University tartan is borrowed from the McFarlane Clan, featured below.

Radford bold and free,
On to victory.
Hail our quest
To bet the best,
Tartan pride for all to see.
Go Radford!
Wave the flags, sound the horns,
Hold the colors high.
Cheer our team on to victory.
That’s the spirit of ole R.U.

Hail all Hail! To our Alma Mater
Bare our heads, make the welkin ring;
Hers our hearts and our fond allegiance
Honors to her we bring.
Praise her broad and lofty aim,
Her purpose ne'er will fail;
Hail to thee, our Alma Mater,
Hail, all Hail!
Hail, all Hail! To the Radford Normal
Give three cheers, and then one cheer more;
Let the praise of our Alma Mater
Echo from shore to shore;
She is ours and our loyalty
will never, never fail.
Hail to thee our Alma Mater,
Hail, all Hail!
