Tanner Montgomery

Tanner Montgomery is entering his second season as an assistant coach with the Radford baseball program after joining the Highlanders in August 2024. In his first year on staff, Montgomery played a key role in a standout 2025 season that saw Radford increase its win total from 16 to 28 — the program’s second-best mark since 2015 — and secure its first postseason berth since 2019.

Montgomery worked extensively with the Highlanders’ catchers and was instrumental in developing the unit into a defensive strength. Under his guidance, Radford improved in every major catching statistic, including receiving metrics, passed ball and wild pitch reduction, and overall run prevention behind the plate. Catcher Tyler Sparrer finished top-10 all-time in Radford’s single-season caught stealing list, while the team significantly increased its success rate in throwing out base-stealers compared to the previous year.

Before arriving in the New River Valley, Montgomery served as the Director of Baseball Operations at James Madison University for the 2024 season. While there, the Dukes posted a 36–25 record and earned a bid to the Raleigh Regional in the NCAA Tournament, advancing to the regional final for just the third time in program history. At JMU, he oversaw all travel logistics and supported the team’s day-to-day operations.

Montgomery’s coaching career began at Bridgewater College, where he served as a Volunteer Assistant Coach. He was actively involved in recruiting, produced scouting reports, and worked primarily with the program’s catchers and hitters.

As a player, Montgomery spent three seasons at Bridgewater as a catcher. He was a member of the program’s leadership council and earned ODAC All-Academic Team honors in 2020. He began his collegiate career at Youngstown State, where he competed from 2017 to 2019.

A native of Akron, Ohio, Montgomery holds both a bachelor’s degree in health and exercise science (2021) and a master’s degree in human resource management (2022), both from Bridgewater College.
