David Boyden joined Radford as an assistant men's basketball coach in June 2016. In his role with the Highlanders, Boyden assists with recruiting, on-floor coaching, scouting and post player development.
The 2018-19 season saw the Highlanders go 22-11 overall and 12-4 in conference play to win a share of the Big South regular season title for the first time since 2008-09. The team reached the Big South Tournament championship game for the second consecutive season as well. He also played an integral role in Radford's 2018 run to a Big South championship and a berth in the NCAA Tournament that included the program's first ever NCAA Tournament victory.

Following the stellar year, as the squad's 21-11 record in the 2019-20 season carried them to their second straight regular season conference title. The season featured wins over Northwestern, Richmond and James Madison. The 20-win season gave Boyden and company its third straight 20-win season – the most consecutive 20-win seasons in program history.
Boyden came to the New River Valley with 10 years of prior Division I assistant coaching experience, including six seasons at his alma mater, Western Kentucky.Â

A two-time All-Sun Belt Conference selection and 1,000-point scorer for the Hilltoppers, Boyden was an assistant with the program for two stints (2008-10 and 2012-16), helping guide teams to five 20-win campaigns, two Sun Belt Conference championships and two NCAA Tournaments, including a first-round victory in 2009. With Boyden on the sidelines, Western Kentucky compiled a 124-78 overall record.

In between that success, he spent the 2011-12 season at Tennessee Tech, working primarily with the post players of a Golden Eagles’ squad that posted a 19-14 mark.

As a player, Boyden ranks third in WKU history with 123 career starts from 2000-03 while playing a key role for teams that won at least 24 games in each of his final three seasons and captured three consecutive Sun Belt East Division and conference tournament titles and NCAA Tournament berths.
He earned All-Sun Belt honors as a junior, was a second-team selection as a senior and was named to the 2003 Sun Belt All-Tournament Team. The native of Richmond, Va., finished his career with 1,167 points, 650 rebounds and 130 assists. In his first two seasons, Boyden was also honored with the E.A. Diddle Award, given to the Hilltopper who best displays leadership, character, loyalty, ability and love of his fellow man.

After receiving his bachelor's degree from the school in 2003, Boyden spent two years working with Radford head coach Mike Jones on Dennis Felton’s staff at Georgia. He first served as an administrative assistant before taking over the role of director of basketball operations for the 2004-05 season.
Boyden then garnered his first assistant coach position at Eastern Kentucky, helping the Colonels to the 2007 Ohio Valley Conference championship and NCAA Tournament during his three seasons.

A 2009 inductee to the Hermitage High School Athletic Hall of Fame, Boyden played one year at Fork Union Military Academy before moving on to Western Kentucky. He earned his Master's Degree from WKU in 2011.
Boyden and his wife, Lindsay, have two daughters, Eva and Nora.
