Entering her fourth season as an assistant, Medlam was hired on Tuesday, July 25, 2017.
In charge of the pitchers, Medlam inherited an outstanding pitching staff in her first season as an assistant. Nonetheless, she knew the recipe for success and led Radford to a 2.50 team ERA, the fifth lowest ERA in program history. The Highlanders even held their opponents to a .260 batting average, which was third best in the Big South.
The Highlanders only walked their opponents 69 times in 2018, which led the Big South and is fourth least all-time at Radford. Part of that success was Abby Morrow, who only allowed 0.76 walks per seven innings, which ranked inside the nations top five. Kayla Huffman was the perfect compliment to Morrow as she posted 108 strikeouts – fifth best in the league – and a 2.01 ERA.
The team was on pace to have a superb record in 2019, but the COVID-19 Global Pandemic ended the season on March 11 with the Highlanders boasting a 13-3 record, which was the second highest winning percentage in the Big South. Jessie Marvin was a bright spot in the circle tossing the program's first-ever five inning no-hitter in a 14-0 win over George Mason on March 1. She had an 8-1 record with a 1.81 ERA and 30 strikeouts. The staff as a whole touted a 2.68 ERA and only allowed 46 runs to score in just over 100 innings.
Medlam comes to Radford after spending a season as the pitching coach at Georgia Southern. She helped the Eagles win 24 games, while leading the pitching staff to 224 strikeouts. She had one pitcher, Dixie Raley; land Second Team All-Sun Belt honors. Raley led the team with 35 starts, six shutouts and claimed 152 strikeouts in 2017.
Prior to her time in Statesboro, Medlam played professionally in the Netherlands. She spent a year in Oosterhout, Netherlands, playing and coaching for the Oosterhout Twins Softball Club. She competed as a starting pitcher and also coordinated pitching clinics and camps for the Twins. She also served as the pitching coach for the junior teams in the club.
Medlam played collegiately for Georgia State, where she was a four-time all-conference pitcher as well as a 2013 National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) all-region first-team selection. While the Panthers were members of the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA), she was named the CAA Rookie of the Year in 2011 and was named to the CAA All-Rookie Team. She also earned three CAA Pitcher of the Week awards and two CAA Rookie of the Week nods.
After the Panthers moved to the Sun Belt Conference prior to the 2014 season, Medlam earned two pitcher of the week awards. She finished her career first in program history in wins (62), fourth in strikeouts (444), fifth in innings pitched (601.1) and eighth in earned run average (2.28). In her final season as a Panther, Medlam finished first in appearances, third in starts, third in innings pitched, fourth in wins, fourth in ERA and tied for fourth in saves in the Sun Belt standings. That season, she also pitched four scoreless innings to earn the win over No. 13 Georgia.
Prior heading overseas the play professionally, Medlam spent the 2015 softball season as the assistant coach and pitching coach for Young Harris College. While with the Mountain Lions, she helped guide the team to a 31-18 record, including an impressive 21-3 mark at home and wins over perennial powerhouses Armstrong State and No. 7 North Georgia. Medlam was in charge of creating and implementing pitching workouts for the YHC pitching staff and assisted with all aspects of the program, including overseeing weight lifting and conditioning workouts as well as coordinating travel. She also coordinated several pitching clinics and camps during her time at Young Harris.
Before she joined the Mountain Lions’ staff, Medlam spent time working with Apalachee High School (Ga.) as well as TPM Fastpitch.
Medlam is a native of Bethlehem, Georgia. She earned her degree in hospitality administration from Georgia State in 2014. She is also the older sister of current softball player, Hannah Medlam.
