Radford University Athletics

Ian Coffey, who has over 14 years of coaching experience, enters his second season as the head coach of Radford University’s Swimming and Diving program.
 
He was hired on July 5, 2012 after stints as head coach at the collegiate and high school level and assistant coaching stops at three different BIG EAST institutions.

A Jenkintown, Pa. native, Coffey comes to Radford after spending four seasons as the head women’s coach at Mansfield University, a Division II program and member of the Pennsylvania State Athletics Conference (PSAC).

During his tenure, Coffey oversaw the enhancement both in the quality and quantity of the Mountaineer swimming program. His early successes were highlighted during his second season in Mansfield, Pa. In 2009-10, Coffey guided two swimmers to PSAC individual qualifying times as well as sending relay teams to the PSAC Championship.

A 1999 graduate of La Salle University, Coffey got his start in collegiate coaching right here in the New River Valley as a graduate assistant coach at Virginia Tech from 2000-02. He has also served as an assistant coach at Syracuse (2002-04) and Villanova (2004-08).
 
Coffey got his first taste of coaching while an undergrad at La Salle when he served as the head women’s swim coach at Mount St. Joseph’s Academy.

In his last stint prior to Mansfield, Coffey spent four seasons with the Villanova Wildcats. Along with coaching mid-distance, sprint and stroke groups, he was responsible for national and international level recruiting and served as the team academic coordinator. Several of his swimmers went on to become Big East Champions and NCAA qualifiers over his four years.
 
Along with running the swimming and diving program, Coffey will serve as the Dedmon Center’s natatorium director.

Coffey graduated with a B.A. in history from La Salle in 1999 and received his M.S. in physical education and heath promotions from Virginia Tech in 2002.
