ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Cassie Consedine sparked a second half run, helping Navy overcome a 1-for-22 start from the field and a 20-6 deficit to defeat Radford, 61-44, Monday evening from Alumni Hall. Trailing by two points at the half, the Midshipmen went on a 22-4 run in the first 10 minutes and did not look back. Consedine scored a game-high 24 points, 17 in the second half and also had a game-high 12 rebounds.
Box Score
The Midshipmen (6-7) outscored the Highlanders 36-17 in the second half and shot 46 percent from the field. Radford (1-9) could not find its range as it shot just 21 percent, hitting only six shots. The Mids also controlled the glass, outrebounding Radford, 28-12 in the second half and 52-32 for the game.
Navy scored the first six points of the second half, taking its first lead of the game on Leigh Myers' layup 50 seconds into the half. Senior Johnette Walker (Columbia, S.C./Irmo) scored Radford's first points of the half on a steal and layup at 15:56.
Walker's layup didn't stop the Mids. Navy continued to hit buckets, including Consedine who scored 14 points to ignite the 22-4 run that gave it a comfortable 47-31 lead at 9:31. Consendine hit two threes during the game-changing run.
The Highlanders cut the lead to 10 on two occasions, but that would be as close as they would get.
Walker and sophomore Taleia Moton (Fort Washington, Md./Suitland) each scored 12 points for the Highlanders. Walker also had six rebounds and three steals, becoming the second Highlander to accumulate 1,000 points, 500 rebounds, 400 assists and 300 steals in a career. Stephanie Howard (1985-89) finished her Radford career with 2,146 points, 561 rebounds, 661 assists and 377 steals.
Walker also moved into 16th on the career scoring charts with 1,044, surpassing Radford's first 1,000 point scorer and former head coach Charlene Curtis (1972-76).
Radford jumped out to a 14-2 lead 6:29 into the first half behind some hot shooting. The Highlanders, who started 8-for-11 from the floor, extended their lead to 20-6 after Moton drained the second of her three first half triples at the 9:42 mark. Moton, coming off the bench, hit all three of her threes in the half for a team-high nine points
Navy, which started the game, 1-for-22 from the field, went on a 13-2 run capped off by five straight points from Erin Edwards to cut the lead to 22-19 with 5:15 left in the half. Walker halted the run with a layup at 4:28 and the Highlanders took a 27-25 lead into halftime.
Radford shot 44 percent for the half, but only hit three shots after its hot start, and had trouble holding onto the ball turning it over 16 times. They did hold the Mids to 21 percent from the field, but Navy was able to shoot 6-for-12 after its poor start and scored 15 points off those 16 Radford mistakes.
After a short holiday break, Radford will host American on Sunday, Dec. 28 at 2 p.m. in Peters Hall.
