Liberty Defeats Volleyball in Four

LYNCHBURG, Va. – Despite Desiree Aramburu's (Chicago, Ill./Mother McAuley) ninth double-double (33 assists, 15 digs) of the season, Liberty defeated Radford 3-1 (25-15, 25-12, 18-25, 25-20) in Big South volleyball action Tuesday evening at the Vines Center.
The loss drops the Highlanders to 10-11 overall and 1-5 in the conference, while first-place Liberty moves to 9-7 and remains perfect in league play improving to 4-0.
For the third consecutive contest, Megan McWhorter (Newport News, Va./Peninsula Catholic) paced the Highlanders with nine kills, while Mariah Nussbaum (Dayton, Ohio/Chaminade Julienne) and Caroline Ratterree (Falcon, Colo./Northeastern JUCO) found the floor with eight swings each, including .261 and .333 clips, respectively.
Aramburu wasn't the only Highlander to finish with double-digit digs as Katelyn Meeks (Richmond, Va./Mills Godwin) also picked up 15 for her 17th 10-dig performance of the season and ninth straight.
Trailing 2-0 at the break, Radford rebounded with a 25-18 triumph in game three to extend the match. After the two teams traded points to find themselves tied 9-9 in the third, the Highlanders grabbed control of the frame with a 9-2 run highlighted by five unanswered, including a pair of kills from McWhorter.
Like Radford in game three, the Flames broke a game-four deadlock with five straight points and never relinquished the lead en route to their 16th straight win over the Highlanders.
Nicki Scripko led Liberty with a match-high 19 kills on 47 attempts (.255). Chelanie McCarty also hit the 10-kill plateau for the Flames with 13 kills and a .522 hitting percentage, while Kallie Corbin set up 46 of Liberty's 58 kills.
Liberty outhit the Highlanders .264 (58 kills) to .113 (39 kills) and finished with a 9-4 margin in total blocks.
Radford will conclude its four-match road trip with a 4 p.m. contest at league-foe Charleston Southern Saturday afternoon.
