Bailey and Eklund Record Top-15 Finishes; Men’s Golf Places T-9th in Fall Finale

SAPPHIRE, N.C. – Kyle Bailey (Fincastle,Va. / James River) and Weston Eklund (Charlottesville, Va. / Albemarle) each fired sub-par rounds Tuesday to lead the Radford men's golf team to a solid Top-10 finish at the 2009 Hummingbird Intercollegiate hosted by Western Carolina.
The 36-hole event was played on the Par 71, 6,767-yard Country Club of Sapphire Valley layout.
Bailey led the way for the Highlanders on the individual leaderboard finishing tied for 10th with a 36-hole total of one-under 141 (73-68). In his second round, Bailey recorded four birdies and just one bogey en route to matching his career low as a collegiate golfer.
Eklund (T-14th) bettered his first 18 by a stroke to conclude the two-day event at even par (72-70) and record his second straight Top-20 finish of the fall.
Lane Hite (Clarksville, Va. / Bluestone) backed his opening round 73 with a one-over 72 to come home tied for 33rd out of 102 competitors.
Also competing for the Highlanders were Paul Woodson (Powhatan, Va. / Powhatan) and Wade Wawner (Virginia Beach, Va. / Floyd E. Kellam), who finished tied for 76th and 91st, respectively.
After opening with a 293, the Highlanders posted a final round 287 (+3), their second lowest total of the fall season, to climb a spot up the 18-team leaderboard.
Furman (-1) erased a three-stroke deficit to claim the team title by two shots over Kentucky (+2) and East Carolina (+2).
The Paladins' Garland Ferrell finished with a two-day total of seven-under 135 (67-68) to win individual medalist by two strokes over Lucas Murray of Akron.
As a team, Radford concluded the fall season with four straight Top-10 finishes, including a season-best sixth place showing at the Frank Landrey Invitational.
Radford will enjoy a four-month break before teeing off its 2010 spring slate at the Charleston Shootout March 1-2 in Charleston, S.C.
