WASHINGTON - Former Radford right-handed pitcher Ryan Speier, the second major leaguer in program history, recently signed a free agent deal to join the Washington Nationals.
Nationals.com announced Speier's signing on Saturday (Dec. 12). After spending the last four seasons with the Colorado Rockies, Speier inked a minor league free agent deal with an invitation to spring training.
In four major league seasons, Speier is 7-3 with a 3.99 ERA in 90 career relief appearances. Speier only appeared in five games for the Rockies in 2009 due to a variety of injuries.
A native of Springfield, Va., Speier spent four seasons with the Highlanders (1998-2001) as a relief ace and starter. Speier signed with the Rockies out of the Cape Cod League on July 23, 2001 and joined Phil Leftwich (Angels – 1993-96) as the only Radford players to play for a major league team in 2005 when he made the Rockies' opening-day roster.
Speier earned the minor league Rolaids Relief Man award in 2004, the first player in Rockies organization history to win the honor.
