RADFORD, Va. – Radford's
Art Parakhouski (Minsk, Belarus) has been named the 2008-09 Big South Player of the Year, while
Joey Lynch-Flohr (Fairfax, Va./Fairfax) joined him on the first team and
Brad Greenberg was named the coach of the year as announced Monday by the league office.
“We're extremely proud of both Art and Joey,” commented Coach Greenberg. “Both are most deserving of first-team all-league honors.”
Just the second player in Radford history to earn the league's top honor, Parakhouski is ninth nationally in rebounding and ranks among Big South leaders in the following categories: scoring (7th/16.0), rebounding (2nd/11.0), field-goal percentage (2nd/.547), free-throw percentage (10th/.674), blocked shots (6th/1.24), defensive rebounds (1st/7.3) and offensive rebounds (2nd/3.7).
A three-time Big South Choice Hotels Player of the Week, Parakhouski has recorded 15 double-doubles this season, including a 39-point, 19-rebound performance in the Highlanders' regular season finale with Liberty. To go along with tying the Dedmon Center scoring record in his last outing, the 6-11 center broke Radford's single-season record for rebounds.
For the season, Parakhouski has hit double figures in 25 of Radford's 29 contests and pulled down at least 10 rebounds in a contest 16 times and at least 15 on six separate occasions.
“We're grateful that Art's consistency and efficiency was recognized by both the head coaches and media,” Greenberg said.
Parakhouski and Lynch-Flohr are the first Highlanders to earn first-team recognition since Whit Holcomb-Faye in 2003-04. The 2001-02 campaign was the last time two Radford players received all-conference honors in the same season.
Living up to his preseason all-conference selection, Lynch-Flohr currently ranks among Big South leaders in scoring (17th/13.7), rebounding (14th/5.6), field-goal percentage (3rd/.527) and free-throw percentage (7th/.712). The 6-8 junior reached the 10-point plateau in all but five contests, including 16 of the last 18.
Forming with Parakhouski as arguably the top frontcourt in the league, Lynch-Flohr is the only forward or center in the Big South to shoot better than 50 percent from the field and 70 percent at the charity stripe.
“We have emphasized the concept of “TEAM” all year,” said Greenberg. “Without the unselfish play of
Amir Johnson (Pittsburgh, Pa./Quaker Valley) and
Kenny Thomas (Richmond, Va./Highland Springs), our two inside players would not have been able to receive first team recognition.”
Greenberg, now in his second season on the bench of the Highlanders, led his club to the biggest turnaround in league history. After finishing seventh last season, Radford claimed its fourth Big South regular season title in school history.
Along with leading the Highlanders to their most wins since the 2000-01 campaign, Radford tied the conference record for league wins in a season with 15. Greenberg's Highlanders have also won a school record nine-straight games away from home, which is currently tied for first nationally with UConn.
Winners of 14 of its last 16 contests, Radford finished January and February with 7-1 marks and currently sits at 18-11 overall.
Greenberg is the first Highlander head coach since 1991-92 to earn conference coach of the year.
Monday the Big South also named the 2008-09 All-Academic team and Radford's
Phillip Martin (Roanoke, Va./Roanoke Catholic) was selected to the squad for the second consecutive season. A member of the 2009 ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-District Men's Basketball team, Martin holds a 3.91 GPA as a double major in social science and philosophy and religious studies.
“Phillip is the epitome of a student-athlete, highly motivated on the court and in the classroom,” remarked Greenberg. “He's a fiercely competitive player and one of the most unselfish team players I've ever been around. It's an honor to coach him.”
Top-seeded Radford will entertain eighth-seeded High Point in the opening round of the 2009 Advance Auto Parts Big South Men's Basketball Tournament Tuesday evening at the Dedmon Center. The game is scheduled to tip at 7 p.m.
By virtue of the regular season crown, the Highlanders will have home court advantage throughout the league tournament.
