TEE TIMES
RADFORD, Va. – Coming off their third top-five finish of the 2008-09 campaign, first-year head coach Jeff Beeler and the Radford women's golf team will begin play in the 2009 Big South Championships Monday, April 13 in Ninety-Six, S.C.
The 54-hole event hosted by High Point University will be played on par 72, 5,956-yard Patriot Club layout.
Radford, which earned the league's fifth seed based on its current Golfweek national ranking, will tee off in groups of three with individuals from Gardner-Webb and Bucknell beginning at 8:45 a.m.
Second and third round tee times will be determined by the team standings following the first two rounds.
To go along with a third place showing in their most recent outing, the Highlanders have finished in the top half of the field five times this season, including a season-best second place at the Lady Herd Fall Classic.
Hannah Coles (Birmingham, England/The Coleshill School) leads Radford with a 76.7 stroke average, which is also third among league leaders. For the season, Coles has recorded five top-20 finishes including four top-five showings in the last five tournaments.
Named the league's golfer of the week on Nov. 19, Coles capped the fall season with a pair of individual medalists. Her first title came at the Charleston Southern Invitational, where she tied for first with a 36-hole total of 149 (73-76). A week later the sophomore carded a two-day score of four-over (75-73=148) to win the Lady Herd Fall Classic hosted by Marshall.
Junior Megan Leineweber (Salisbury, Md./Parkside) is second on the team with a 79.5 scoring average, while Jade Okamoto (Huntington Beach, Calif./Marina), Maggie Watts (Paris, Ky./Paris) and Brittany Hine (Elkton, Va.) are averaging just over 82 strokes per round.
In search of their first league title in school history, the Highlanders haven't finished higher than fourth in the championship, which has happened on three separate occasions.
The 2009 Big South Champions will receive the league's automatic berth to the NCAA Regionals.
