FINAL RESULTS
NINETY-SIX, S.C. – Faced with windy conditions for the third consecutive day, the Radford men's golf team saved its best round for last, carding Wednesday's lowest total of 307 to finish fifth at the 2009 Big South Championship.
The 54-hole event hosted by Coastal Carolina was played on the Par 72, 7,079-yard Patriot Club layout.
Chris Dillow (Bland, Va./Bland), who carded the lowest Highlander round of the day, finished in a tie for 15th with two of his teammates.
Kyle Bailey (Fincastle, Va./James River) and
Lane Hite (Clarksville, Va./Bluestone) each shot 79 on their final 18 holes to match Dillow's total of 232.
Freshman
Paul Woodson (Powhatan, Va./Powhatan) ended up just two strokes back of the Radford trio in a tie for 18th, while
Michael Wade (Floyd, Va./Floyd) recorded a five-over 77 today to place alone in 40th.
Despite shooting 12 shots worse than his tournament-low 67 Tuesday, Coastal Carolina's Zack Byrd claimed individual medalist by three strokes over his teammates Sam Lyons and David Dannelly.
The Chanticleers finished with a team total of 891 (297-286-308) to win their sixth straight Big South title.
Liberty, which found itself in last place following Monday's opening round, continued its climb up the team leaderboard to place second, 31 strokes behind the Chanticleers.
Gardner-Webb, which was in second after the first two rounds, posted a final round of 319 to fall to third place, just one stroke ahead of Winthrop (927) and two clear of the Highlanders. Charleston Southern and High Point officially tied for sixth, while Presbyterian tallied a 323 this afternoon to finish with a 54-hole total of 938. The Blue Hose are not eligible for the Conference championship as its team and individual results don't officially count in the standings due to its continuing transition to Division I.
By virtue of its 11th Big South title in the last 13 years, Coastal Carolina earned the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
Radford will conclude its spring campaign at the Cavalier Classic April 25-26 in Charlottesville, Va.
