Round One Results
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Playing in his first event of the 2009 spring campaign,
Alex Karkeek (Exeter, England/Clyst Vale) fired a one-under 71, while the Radford men's golf team opened the Cavalier Classic with a 298 Saturday.
The 36-hole event hosted by the University of Virginia is being played on the Par 72, 6,875-yard Birdwood Golf Course layout.
Teeing it up for the first time since the Charleston Southern Fall Invitational (Oct. 21-22), Karkeek carded a 35 on the front side before bettering his personal best by two strokes to sit tied for ninth.
Despite being tied for ninth out of 18 on the team leaderboard, the Highlanders will enter the final day of competition just six strokes out of second and 12 shots off the lead.
Senior
Chris Dillow (Bland, Va./Bland) shot his second straight one-over 73 to stand tied for 21st, while
Lane Hite (Clarksville, Va./Bluestone) posted an opening round 76.
Also competing for Radford are
Paul Woodson (Powhatan, Va./Powhatan) and
Kyle Bailey (Fincastle, Va./James River), who sit tied for 67th and 92nd, respectively.
UNC Wilmington's Josh Brock leads the field at five-under 67. He had six birdies during his round and did not record a bogey until the 18th hole.
South Carolina was led by George Bryan IV's two-under 70. Three other Gamecocks shot even-par 72 to help USC to a first-round lead.
The final round of the Cavalier Classic starts at 8 a.m. at Birdwood Golf Course. The Highlanders are scheduled to tee off at 10:15 a.m.
