GREENVILLE, N.C. – Battling through windy conditions, Radford carded an opening round 314 and is currently 12th at the Ironwood Pirate Intercollegiate hosted by East Carolina University.
The 54-hole event is being played on the Par 72, 7,076-yard Ironwood Golf and Country Club layout.
Paul Woodson (Powhatan, Va./Powhatan) is the top Highlander on the individual leaderboard following a four-over 76, putting him in a tie for 23rd.
Playing in his first collegiate tournament, junior
Brixton Albert (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) is tied with
Chris Dillow (Bland, Va./Bland) and eight others in 52nd at seven-over par.
Also competing for Radford is
Kyle Bailey (Fincastle, Va./James River) and
Lane Hite (Clarksville, Va./Bluestone), who opened with rounds of 80 and 84, respectively.
The host Pirates hold the top spot on the team leaderboard by nine strokes, while Taylor Fontaine of Rhode Island is first in the individual standings following a six-under 66.
Joining the Highlanders in the 17-team field are Akron, Boston College, East Carolina, Furman, Georgetown, James Madison, Longwood, Navy, Newberry, Presbyterian, Rhode Island, St. John's, Samford, Seton Hall, UNC Wilmington and Wofford.
The second round of the annual event will begin Saturday morning.
