RADFORD, Va. – On the heels of joining
Martin Sayer (Hong Kong) as the first duo in Radford men's tennis history to earn an at-large selection to the NCAA Doubles Championships,
Zack Watson (Harrisonburg, Va./Eastern Mennonite) has been named team captain for the 2009-10 season as announced by head coach
Mike Anderson.
“Next year
Zack Watson has some big shoes to fill replacing
Martin Sayer and
Mehdi Benhammou (Rabat, Morocco) as captain of our 2009-10 men's tennis team,” commented Anderson. “He will be the only captain on the squad, so his leadership will be important to the success of our squad next season.”
A two-time all-conference performer in doubles, Watson and Sayer finished the 2009 season 19-3 overall before concluding the campaign ranked 51st in the ITA Rankings.
In singles action, Watson holds a career record of 60-21, which includes an impressive 14-3 mark in Big South matches.
“Zack's tennis and maturity as a young man has grown each year at Radford and he is well prepared for the task at hand -- serving as the captain of a nationally-ranked men's tennis program. In discussing this role of captain with Zack, he is as excited as I am about accepting this role.”
Along with winning its fourth straight regular season title and third consecutive tournament title, Radford finished the 2009 season 20-4 overall and ranked 53rd in the national polls.
