CHARLOTTE, N.C. – After almost one full month away from competition, Radford returned to the court in impressive fashion defeating Charlotte 5-2 in non-conference men's tennis action Friday afternoon at the Phillips Tennis Complex.
The Highlanders (1-4), who have won 43 of their last 51 regular season matches, jumped out to a 1-0 lead by sweeping the doubles portion.
Playing with three doubles tandems that had never competed together in a dual,
Paul Boslet (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) and
Erik Finkenbrink (Duelman, Germany / Annette Gymnasium) gave Radford its first win with a convincing 8-2 triumph on court two.
The veteran-youth duo of
Ivan Salec (Oroslavje, Croatia / Oroslavje Secondary School) and
Thomas Dehaen (Zwevegem, Belgium / Middenjury) clinched the team point for Radford with an 8-4 win over Moritz Bernhoerster and Jesse Hutchinson, while
Zack Watson (Harrisonburg, Va. / Eastern Mennonite) and
Igor Ogrizek (Daruvar, Croatia / Birotechnika Grammar School) held on for an 8-6 victory at the No. 3 position.
In singles play, the Highlanders got straight-set wins from Salec (6-0, 6-3), Dehaen (6-4, 6-1), Ogrizek (6-2, 6-4) and Finkenbrink (6-1, 6-4).
Charlotte's (1-5) only wins in singles competition came from Bernhoerster (6-1, 6-2) and Hutchinson (6-2, 6-4) at positions three and five, respectively.
Radford will enjoy an eight-day break before beginning its five-match Spring Break trip with a 1 p.m. match at George Washington on March 6.
