PINEHURST, N.C. – Playing in their second event of the 2010 spring campaign, the Radford men's golf team sits ninth following round one of the Pinehurst Intercollegiate presented by Gatorade.

The 54-hole / 15-team event is being played on the Par 72, 7,009 Centennial Pinehurst No. 8 layout.

Despite its opening round total, Radford is only 10 strokes out of third and just 12 back of Penn State (288), which holds the top spot on the team leaderboard by one shot over Eastern Kentucky (289).

Leading the way for the Highlanders are first-year competitors Wade Wawner (Virginia Beach, Va. / Floyd E. Kellam) and Weston Eklund (Charlottesville, Va./Albemarle), who sit tied for 23rd at two-over par.

Kyle Bailey (Fincastle,Va. / James River) is one back of his teammates in a tie 32nd, while Michael Wade (Floyd, Va. / Floyd) and Lane Hite (Clarksville, Va. / Bluestone) will enter day two tied for 52nd and 65th following rounds of 77 and 79, respectively.

Like his team, Kevin Foley sits atop the individual leaderboard after a 68. Foley's four-under opening round was one of eight scores under par Friday.

Round two of the three-day event will begin Saturday morning. The Highlanders will play in groups of three with individuals from Southern Methodist and Old Dominion beginning at 9:09 a.m.
