RADFORD, Va. – Radford extended its home winning streak to 35 straight with a 6-1 victory over Elon in non-conference men's tennis action Wednesday afternoon at the RU Tennis Courts.
The Highlanders, who played their first 13 matches (10 duels) away from home, ended a stretch of four consecutive 4-3 setbacks to improve to 3-8 overall. The loss drops the Phoenix to 4-9.
For just the third time this season, Radford grabbed the early 1-0 lead by winning two of the three doubles contests. The Highlanders' top duo of
Ivan Salec and
Thomas Dehaen edged Chase Helpingstine and Alberto Rojas, 8-6, while
Igor Ogrizek and
Zack Watson clinched the team point with an 8-4 decision on court three.
Shortly after Watson put the first singles point on the board for the Highlanders with 6-3, 6-1 win at the fifth position, Elon cut the deficit to 2-1 thanks to Eric Turner's straight-set (7-5, 6-0) triumph.
Freshman
Erik Finkenbrink extended Radford's lead to 3-1 with a two-set (6-4, 6-1) victory over Thomas Darling.
Ranked 79th in the most recent ITA singles rankings, Salec extended his winning streak to seven and secured the dual with a 7-6 (3), 7-5 defeat of Philip Nemec at the top spot.
Like Salec, Ogrizek won his seventh consecutive match and improved to a team-best 8-3 in singles action with a three-set win at the No. 3 spot.
The Highlanders' final singles win came from Dehaen, who held off Helpingstine, 7-6 (3), 6-3 on court two.
Radford will continue its three-match homestand Friday afternoon with a 3 p.m. match against South Carolina State.
