MEN'S TENNIS HOLDS OFF ST. JOHN'S, 4-1

RESULTS

RADFORD, Va. –
Despite dropping the doubles point, the Radford men's tennis team stretched their home winning streak to 37 straight with a 4-1 win over St. John's Saturday afternoon at the RU Tennis Courts.

Along with extending their home streak, the Highlanders won their third straight improving to 5-8, while the Red Storm fell to 3-8 on the 2010 campaign.

After Radford's Ivan Salec and Thomas Dehaen improved to 8-1 with an 8-5 victory on court one, the Red Storm claimed the final two positions by identical 9-8 (8) margins, to hand the Highlanders their first home doubles setback in almost four years (Birmingham Southern, 3/29/2006).

Salec, the 79th ranked singles player in the nation, wasted little time tying the match (1-1) as the two-time all-conference performer defeated Pavel Cerny in convincing fashion, 6-2, 6-1. Along with winning his ninth straight at the top position, Salec improved to 9-4 on the spring.

Radford freshman Erik Finkenbrink gave his club their first lead of the match with an impressive straight-set (6-1, 6-2) win of his own at the final singles position.

On court five, Zack Watson put the Highlanders one win away from the team triumph holding off three set points in the second to defeat Mike Lampa, 6-1, 7-6 (6).

Like Salec, Igor Ogrizek came in on a nine match winning streak and completed the comeback for Radford with a 6-7 (7), 6-1, 6-2 win over former Highlander Stefan Bojic at the third position.

Singles matches on courts two and four were still in progress when the dual was decided. Radford was leading in the third set of both matches.

Due to St. John's playing South Carolina State earlier in the day, the two teams agreed to play to decision prior to the contest.

Radford will enjoy a week break before traveling to Presbyterian for its Big South opener March 27 at 10 a.m. in Clinton, S.C.
