RADFORD, Va. – In a battle of the only unbeaten teams in Big South play, Radford cruised by league-rival Winthrop, 6-1, in men's tennis action Friday afternoon at the RU Tennis Courts.
In addition to winning 30 of their last 31 against conference foes, the Highlanders have won 40 of 41 home contests, while improving to 10-9 overall and 4-0 in league play. The loss drops the Eagles to 7-11 and into a tie with Coastal Carolina (3-1) for second place in the regular season standings.
“This was a great home win against a very tough Winthrop team,” commented Radford head coach
Mike Anderson. “Efforts like today will continue to boost our confidence as we get closer and closer to the Big South Tournament in two weeks.”
With the doubles portion tied 1-1, Radford's
Ivan Salec and
Thomas Dehaen secured the team point with an 8-5 win over Sergey Belov and Daniel Daudt. Along with extending their winning streak to 10 straight, the Highlanders' top duo improved to a conference-best 14-1.
Igor Ogrizek and
Erik Finkenbrink put RU one win away from the team point with a convincing 8-2 defeat of Dejon Bivens and Liran Levy at the No. 3 position.
Since shuffling its lineup against Coastal Carolina on April 3, Radford has yet to drop the doubles point.
Salec, the reigning Big South Player of the Week, gave the Highlanders a 2-0 team advantage with a 6-2, 6-3 triumph at the top spot.
Shortly after Salec's 14th win of the spring, Finkenbrink put his club one win away from victory with a straight-set (6-2, 6-4) decision of his own on court six.
Paul Boslet's 6-4, 6-4 win over Bevins at the No. 4 singles position clinched the match and kept Radford's unblemished league record intact.
Like Salec, Ogrizek entered winning 13 of his last 14 matches, as the sophomore improved to a team-best 15-4 in singles action with his 6-3, 6-1 win on court three.
Zack Watson put the final point on the board and became the fifth Radford player to hit the 10-win plateau this spring with a three-set win over Guy Kubi.
Winthrop's lone singles win came from Nadav Ruppin.
Radford will travel to Lynchburg, Va. to take on conference foe Liberty tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m.
