RADFORD, Va. – Joe Mills (Brighton, England),
Nicholas Sayer (Hong Kong, China),
Randall Carter (Abingdon, Va.) and
Alexander Metzner (Middleton, Md.) have signed National Letters of Intent to join the Radford men's tennis team in 2010-11, as announced by head coach
Mike Anderson Monday morning.
“We are actively recruiting one more piece to this puzzle and with the addition of that piece this could be the best overall recruiting class we have had in the history of the RU men's tennis program,” said Anderson, who recently was named Big South Coach of the Year a record fifth straight season. “This will be a young team anchored by the senior leadership of co-captains
Ivan Salec and
Paul Boslet, and the solid play of
Igor Ogrizek and
Thomas Dehaen.”
“I am as excited as I have ever been as the RU head coach to get this team together and see what we can do. The future is bright for RU men's tennis."
Coach Anderson on Mills
"Joe brings a wealth of match play experience to Radford University. Having played and moved up the ranks in the UK juniors to No. 1, Joe will have an immediate impact in DI tennis and on the Radford tennis program. Joe comes from a family of educators and is going to be an excellent student. We are lucky and very happy to have Joe join the RU tennis and school community."
Coach Anderson on Sayer
"Nick also has extensive UK tournament experience and moved up to the No. 6 spot in the UK junior rankings. He is not only skilled in tennis, but soccer as well. Nick will perform well against DI competition and should be one of the top players not only in the conference, but on the national stage. Like Joe Mills, Nick also has an excellent academic background. Another one of his strengths is his doubles play, which is very important at this level. We are excited and looking forward to having two Sayers here at Radford.” (Nick is the younger brother of former Radford men's tennis standout and current assistant coach
Martin Sayer)
Coach Anderson on Carter
"This kid can play tennis. He was hidden in the Abingdon area of Southwest Virginia, but will soon be discovered by the DI tennis community. His remarkable singles record to date shows that he knows how to win. After getting his feet wet against the tough DI competition and practicing and playing with the players on the team, Randall will develop into a force to be reckoned with in college tennis. As with Nick and Joe, Randall has terrific academic achievements on his resume. He is a great addition to the team and university."
Coach Anderson on Metzner
"Alex spent the last year at Saddlebrook in Florida honing his tennis skills. His high school record in Maryland shows he knows how to win. Now with time and the level of competition within the team and on the DI level, Alex will develop into a top DI player."
Along with its fifth straight Big South regular season title, Radford's Salec will compete in next week's 2010 NCAA Singles Championships in Athens, Ga.
This year marks the fifth straight season a Highlander has been selected to take part in the NCAA Championships as
Martin Sayer advanced the previous four, including a berth in the doubles championships with partner
Zack Watson (Timberville, Va./Eastern Mennonite) a year ago.
