RADFORD, Va. – Sophomore Mary Wiley fired a golden goal from outside the 18-yard box in the first overtime frame to lift Radford women's soccer past Campbell, 1-0, Thursday night at Patrick D. Cupp Memorial Stadium.
Wiley's game-winning strike ricocheted off the crossbar and snuck across the goal line before Campbell's keeper Jamie Panfil could make the save.
"Mary (Wiley) is a competitor and hates to lose more than anybody I've ever coached and she got a great shot off," said head coach Ben Sohrabi.
"At the end, we just came together and said we're winning this game and we're going home. We almost scored two in the beginning, but we came through with hard work," said Wiley about her team's performance.
With the overtime thriller, Radford improves to 4-1-0 on the season and Campbell falls to 3-3-1.
The Highlanders slipped through the Campbell defense several times throughout the match and a relentless offensive attack generated a 19-5 shot advantage.
"I thought we played a very good soccer game tonight. We possessed the ball well and thought we had some great combinations up top," said Sohrabi.
In the 70th minute, freshman Julie Ruh'e missed a chance to net the go-ahead goal when her shot from five yards out on a cross from Maryellen Derenda went just right of the post.
For the Camels, Panfil made nine stops on the night, saving many scoring opportunities that the Highlanders presented.
Campbell's best offensive threat came from Annabelle Gibney when a loose ball came right to her at the 18-yard box, blasting a shot that missed wide right.
Every time Campbell attempted to seize an opportunity, freshman defender Tyler Drake marked up and cleared the ball. She limited Campbell's leading goal-scorer Olga Ekblom to only one shot on the night.
"You just have to follow you mark. Sometimes it's hard when you get tired towards the end, but it pays off and we ended up with a win," said Drake about marking up on Ekblom.
Radford controlled the tempo in the first frame, outshooting Campbell, 8-1. The Highlanders had many chances including two on-point shots from freshman Rachel Conway, and another by Wiley, but Panfil came up big to make the stops, preventing Radford from taking an early lead.
The Highlanders continue their two-game home stand when they take on Old Dominion on Sunday at 1 p.m.
