COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Despite
Ivan Salec's (Oroslavje, Croatia / Oroslavje Secondary School) straight-set win over No. 58 Maros Horny, Radford fell on the road to nationally-ranked Maryland, 4-3, Saturday afternoon inside the Tennis Center at College Park.
After falling behind 3-0, the Highlanders (1-2) responded with singles victories from Salec,
Nicholas Sayer (Hong Kong, Hong Kong / Cams Hill School) and
Igor Ogrizek (Daruvar, Croatia / Birotechnika Grammar School) to tie the dual, 3-3.
Salec, who entered ranked 51st in the latest ITA Rankings, defeated Horny 7-6 (1), 6-3
Like Salec, Sayer (3-6, 7-5, 6-2) and Ogrizek (6-1, 7-6 (3)) also improved to 3-0 on the young season with victories on courts three and five, respectively.
With the match tied 3-3, Maryland's Tommy Laine secured the win with a 6-2, 6-4 decision at the final singles position.
Radford will enjoy a week break before heading to Coastal Carolina for its Big South opener Feb. 26 at noon.
