BOX SCORE
RALEIGH, N.C. – North Carolina State collected 16 hits en route to finishing a two-game sweep of Radford with an 8-1 win on Wednesday afternoon.
Cory Turner extended his hitting streak to nine games in the loss and brought home the only Radford (6-6) run in the eighth.
Leadoff hitter John Gianis went 3-for-4 for the Wolfpack (7-5) and drove in runs in the second and fourth innings. Brett Williams also went 3-for-4 with an RBI and scored twice. Pratt Maynard added a two-run home run, his first, to right field in the home half of the sixth on his way to a 3-for-5 day at the plate.
"Today was a day where we didn't pitch or defend enough and had some miscues that cost us runs early," head coach Joe Raccuia said. "There were situations with 1-2 counts, 0-2 counts where we had chances to put hitters away and it didn't happen."
Radford's lone run came in the eighth inning. Ricky Sowers and Greg Juanarena reeled off back-to-back singles and a walk to Jeff Kemp loaded the bases. A walk to Turner brought in Sowers.
The Highlanders threatened in the fourth with back-to-back hits courtesy of Kemp's leadoff single and a hit by Turner. Radford wasn't able to capitalize, however, as NC State erased the lead runner for Radford on back-to-back plays.
Radford had five hits in the game.
NOTE: Radford's home opener with Hartford on Friday, originally schedule for 4 p.m., was moved to 2:30 p.m.
