NO. 1 VIRGINIA BEATS RADFORD BASEBALL 12-0

BOX SCORE

RADFORD, Va.
– Top-ranked Virginia scored five runs in the first inning, three more in the second, and never looked back in a 12-0 win over Radford in front of an RU Baseball Stadium-record 1,373 fans on Tuesday night.

“You've got move on and try and forget it, but we learned a lot of lessons tonight,” head coach Joe Raccuia said. “They score runs when you make mistakes. You have to play clean, pitch well, and get ahead on their hitters. You won't get many chances to score against Virginia.

“We were fortunate to have a good atmosphere and I just wish we would have performed better.”

The Cavaliers, owners of the nation's best record (37-3), took the lead on the first pitch of the game on Chris Taylor's blast to right. Danny Hultzen singled home a run, Radford native Jared King delivered two more in the inning on his two-run double to left, and David Coleman knocked in another before a 4-6-3 inning-ending double play.

John Hicks hit a three-run homer in the second to make it 8-0, Taylor brought home two more in the sixth on a bases-loaded double and Reed Gragnani's triple scored two more in the ninth.

Coleman finished 4-for-4 and Taylor was 3-for-4 with three RBIs. Right-hander Cody Winiarski went seven innings on the way to the win (5-2), allowing just two hits.

Jeff Kemp and Ryan Burgess had the only hits for the Highlanders (21-15) – Burgess extended his hitting streak to seven games.

The Highlanders return to Big South play on Friday for the start of a three-game series at UNC Asheville. Friday's game at McCormick Field is a 3 p.m. start.
