RADFORD, Va. – In search of its fourth conference tournament title in the last five years, No. 64 Radford will open the 2011 Big South Men's Tennis Championship with a 4 p.m. dual against Presbyterian Thursday afternoon on the campus of Winthrop University.
The winner of Thursday's final quarterfinal match will advance to face the victor of the contest between third-seeded Coastal Carolina and sixth-seeded Liberty.
The second-seeded Highlanders enter the three-day event on a school-record 15-match winning streak, to go along with a league-best 19-3 overall record.
Dating back to the Elon match (March 5), RU has outscored the opposition by a combined 90-14 margin.
Under the direction of five-time Big South Coach of the Year
Mike Anderson, Radford has won 44 of its last 49 matches (includes tournament) against league competition, while making five-straight finals appearances.
Also highlighting the Highlanders' 2011 resume are their nine shutouts, including five consecutive at one point.
Six-time Big South Player of the Week
Ivan Salec (Oroslavje, Croatia / Oroslavje Secondary School) leads the league with a 19-1 overall record at the No. 1 singles position. The three-time all-conference performer and 2010 NCAA participant enters his final conference tournament on a 14-match winning streak.
In addition to Salec's outstanding play, freshman
Stijn Meulemans (Belgium / KA2 sportschool Hasselt) and sophomore
Thomas Dehaen (Zwevegem, Belgium / Middenjury) rank just behind their teammate with identical 18-3 marks, which includes 17 and 15-match streaks, respectively.
Nick Sayer (Hong Kong, Hong Kong / Cams Hill School), who has earned four Big South Freshman of the Week honors, isn't far behind with a 17-3 record this spring at the No. 2 position, while junior
Igor Ogrizek (Daruvar, Croatia / Birotechnika Grammar School) is 15-5 overall.
Radford's top doubles team of Salec and Dehaen, lead the league with a 16-5 record on court one. Undefeated in the league play the last two seasons, the duo is a combined 34-6 since teaming up a year ago.
As a team, the Highlanders, who have collected 13 weekly honors in 2011, are 104-25 (.806) in singles play and 46-20 (.697) in the doubles competition.
