BRISTOL, Va. – On the heels of an opening round 65, former Radford University men's golfer
Lane Hite (Clarksville, Va.) carded a two-under 69 Wednesday, to win stroke play medalist honors and grab the top seed of the 98th VSGA Amateur Championship. at The Virginian Golf Club.
Hite (65-69 = 134 / -8), who works in the golf shop at Owl's Creek Golf Course in Virginia Beach, was even through 14 holes before making birdies on two of the last three holes, Nos. 16 and 18, to assure his spot atop the match play bracket.
In addition to Hite, red-shirt junior
Weston Eklund (Charlottesville, Va.) fired a five-under 66, the days lowest round, to grab the No. 3 seed, while senior
Paul Woodson (Powhatan, Va.) shot a two-under 69 to finish tied for 15th and advance.
Making his fourth appearance, Eklund ignited his round at the par-5 14th hole, drilling a hybrid from 225 yards to five feet for an eventual eagle that moved him to four under for the round. He added a birdie two holes later en route to shooting 4-under 32 on the inward half.
The first and second rounds of match play are set for Thursday, June 30. The quarterfinals and semifinals are Friday, July 1 before the scheduled 36-hole final on Saturday, July 2.
