After a record-setting season in 2011, Radford right-handed closer Abram Williams (Radford, Va./Radford) was named to the National Collegiate Baseball Writers' Association (NCBWA) Preseason Stopper of the Year Award watch list on Tuesday.
The award is given to the top relief pitcher in Division I baseball.
Williams set new school and Big South records with 17 saves on 19 chances last season, ranking seventh in Division I. He earned First Team All-Big South honors and was added to the 2011 Stopper of the Year watch list halfway through the season.
A captain in 2012 for Radford, Williams has made 48 relief appearances in two seasons and owns the school's career saves record (19). Last season, Williams was 0-2 with a 3.48 ERA in 24 appearances and struck out 28 batters in 31 innings.
The NCBWA's All-America Committee will select the winner, with this year's recipient to be announced during the 2012 College World Series. The NCBWA, founded in 1962, presents the Dick Howser Trophy to the nation's top player. It also selects All-America Teams for all Divisions, a Division I Freshman All-American team, Division I and III Players of the Week, Division I District Players of the Year and Division III Players of the Year.
