RADFORD OPENS IN FOURTH AT WENDY’S KIAWAH CLASSIC

ROUND 1  |  INDIVIDUAL

KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. –
Playing in its last tournament of the fall, the Radford men's golf team carded an 8-over-par 292 in the first round of the Wendy's Kiawah Classic to open in fourth place Sunday. The 54-hole event is being played at the Kiawah Island Resort's Turtle Point Golf Course (par 71, 7,006 yards).

South Carolina leads the 26-team field following its 2-under-par 282. The Gamecocks carry a seven-shot advantage over Winthrop (289) into the second round. One stroke back of the Eagles is the College of Charleston (290), followed by the Highlanders.

Leading the Radford charge was sophomore Tanner Carbaugh, who logged a 1-over-par 72 on day one and is tied for 18th. After getting off to a rocky start, Carbaugh responded with back-to-back birdies at holes six and seven to get back to even par. Carbaugh suffered bogeys on three of the next five holes, but he showed resiliency with birdies at holes 13 and 14 to move to 1-over-par. Following a bogey at the 16th, Carbaugh bounced back with his fifth birdie of the day at No. 17 and parred the 18th.

Weston Eklund, the nation's 28th-ranked golfer, also had to rally on the back nine after posting a 3-over-par 38 over the first nine holes. The redshirt senior was 5-over-par until Eklund recorded birdies at holes 13, 16 and 18 to finish at 2-over-par 73. He enters the second round tied for 30th.

Also in a tie for 30th is Callum Tarren, who made the turn at 2-over-par and after a bogey at the 11th hole, the junior finished 1-under-par over his final seven holes. Matt Harman carded a birdie on the last hole of each nine on his way to a 3-over-par 74. The junior is tied for 40th after one round of play.

Conner Hayden returned an 8-over-par 79 to the clubhouse. After being 9-over-par through 12 holes, the freshman finished strong by playing his final six holes in 1-under-par and is tied for 94th.

Utah Valley's Mason Casper and South Carolina's Caleb Sturgeon shot 3-under-par 68 and own a one-shot edge in the individual chase over Sturgeon's teammate, Matthew NeSmith.

The Highlanders are paired with Boise State and St. John's for Monday's second round. Live scoring is provided by Golfstat and can be viewed by clicking here.
