FARMVILLE, Va. – Radford battled No. 14 Stanford for 70 minutes, but the Cardinal used two second-half goals to defeat the Highlanders, 2-0, in the first round of the NorPac Championships on a chilly evening from the Athletics Complex on the campus of Longwood University.
Junior Sidney Encarnacion made 11 saves and sophomore Jennifer Hedrick recorded two of Radford's four defensive saves to keep the Highlanders within striking distance the entire match.
Following a scoreless first half, the Cardinal (13-6) finally broke through five minutes into the second stanza when Kelsey Harbin blasted one into the cage off a direct corner.
Radford continued to thwart several Stanford scoring threats, which included killing off a five-minute yellow card, and it almost paid off as the Highlanders (2-18) earned their first two corners of the match in the 64th minute. However, Stanford keeper Dulcie Davies made three saves to keep the Cardinal margin at 1-0.
A minute later, Stanford capitalized on another corner when Becky Dru's hard shot deflected high into the cage for the two-goal cushion.
Juniors Alayna Versage and Emily Voss also charted defensive saves, while freshman Stacey Mackintosh registered two of the Highlanders' four shots.
Radford will return to action tomorrow at 6:30 p.m. against Longwood or California for its final contest of 2012.
