GREENSBORO, N.C. – North Carolina A&T scored eight runs in the first two innings and didn't look back in a 13-10 win over Radford on Wednesday afternoon.
Cory Turner (Manassas, Va., Osbourn) and
Matt Hillsinger (Bowie, Md., Archbishop Spalding) hit their first home runs of the season for the Highlanders (2-6) – Turner hit a three-run blast in the sixth inning and Hillsinger hit a solo homer with two outs in the ninth.
Ryan Burgess (Richmond, Va., Steward School) went 3-for-4 with a fourth-inning single that got Radford on the board for the first time. Catcher
Daniel Wright (Weyers Cave, Va., Fort Defiance) threw out three baserunners on attempted steals.
Radford outscored the Aggies 10-5 over the final five innings, but it wasn't enough to complete the comeback.
Marquis Riley and Dairio Little had three RBIs each for North Carolina A&T (4-5) – Little and Andre McKoy had four hits each as part of an 18-hit attack. Kelvin Freeman hit a two-run homer in the second, part of a six-run inning for the Aggies.
All nine batters in the order had hits for North Carolina A&T, while nine batters, including eight in the starting lineup, had hits for the Highlanders.
The Aggies broke the game open when they batted around in the second inning and added four more in the fifth.
Radford had its big inning in the sixth, highlighted by Turner's homer, added two in the eighth when
Josh Gardiner (Culpeper, Va., Eastern View) singled home a run, then scored when
Zach Costello (South Riding, Va., Paul VI) attempted to steal second and created the hang-up that scored Gardiner, and a run in the ninth on Hillisinger's homer.
In a matchup of freshman starters, North Carolina A&T's Shane Carter went five inning to get the win (1-0). Radford lefty
Jeff Maxwell (Lynchburg, Va., Brookville) took the loss (0-2), allowing six runs over an inning and two-thirds.
The Highlanders conclude their 12-game road trip with a three-game series beginning Friday at UNC Greensboro.
