Baseball Swept by No. 23 Virginia in Return to Action

BOX SCORE 1 | BOX SCORE 2 CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – After having the week off during finals, the Radford Highlanders baseball team dropped both games of a doubleheader to No. 23 Virginia, 11-1 in game one and 14-5 in game two, on Sunday afternoon at Davenport Field.

GAME ONE
Though not putting together much of a battle with the bats, only one truly tough inning sunk Radford in the opening contest. Raymond Ladd made his 12th start of the season and got off to a terrific start, striking out each of the first three batters in the first. The Danville native made it four strikeouts in-a-row to open the second before getting in some trouble with two outs. He elicited a popout to shallow right that was grabbed by Noah Toole that kept it scoreless through two.

Coming off of quite a birthday performance last Sunday, Brooks Simpson brought home Brady Powell with a one out single to give Radford the first run of the contest in the top of the third. The lead would be short lived, as the Cavaliers hit three solo home runs off reliever Matthew Lefevers in the bottom half of the frame.

Daniel Quintana took over on the mound in the fourth and initially found success in settling down Virginia, putting up goose eggs in the fourth and fifth innings. The Cavaliers got after the veteran in the sixth, taking a 5-1 lead on a two-run single before a three-run shot put things away at 8-1. Another two-run blast made it 10-1 before Quintana could finish the sixth. The Highlanders left the bases loaded without scoring in the top of the seventh, and Virginia had two hits off Mason Self to run-rule walk-off the Highlanders 11-1 in the first contest.

GAME TWO
Breckin Nace got the Highlanders going out of the gates, smashing a three-run blast to right field in the first. The Highlanders led through an inning and a half before the Cavaliers struck for five runs in the second, all being charged to starter Andrew Steinhaus. The Highlanders got one back in the top of the third. Junho Son reached on an infield single and found himself in scoring position on an error by the catcher. Hunter Keen brought him home on a single to right that made it a 5-4 game.

The Cavaliers kept a one run lead until they struck with three extra-base hits in the fourth off Corey Costello that made it an 8-4 contest after four. Virginia tagged Joshua Milleville and the Highlanders with four more runs to make it a 12-4 game after five. Son added another single with two gone in the sixth inning and capitalized on an error by the Cavaliers to score on a Luke Sullivan single. That run proved crucial in the seventh to avoid a second run rule, as the Cavaliers got two home but failed to end it in seven.

Mason Hatcher set down the Cavaliers in order in the eighth to try and set the Highlanders up for another crack against the Cavaliers with the bats. Radford managed to load the bases but failed to strike for a run off of Virginia's closer, ending the contest with 14 runners stranded in the 14-5 loss.

UP NEXT
The Highlanders have a rematch against a tough nonconference foe in reigning SoCon champs East Tennessee State. First pitch against the Buccaneers is set for Tuesday, May 5 at 5:00 p.m. from Johnson City, Tenn. Fans can follow the action on ESPN+.
