Simpson’s Breakout Showing Capped Off with Big South Freshman of the Week Honor

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Big South Conference announced Monday afternoon that Radford freshman Brooks Simpson has been named the Freshman of the Week after an impressive week capped off by a 5-5 day with two home runs to win the series at Presbyterian.

Simpson had a standout week for the Highlanders. The freshman recorded 10 hits in 16 at-bats, posting an impressive .625 batting average. His breakout performance came in game three of the Presbyterian series, where he went a perfect 5-for-5 with two doubles and two home runs. He also finished the week with a .667 on-base percentage and an outstanding 1.125 slugging percentage. Since moving into right field, Simpson has continued to contribute defensively, recording a perfect four putouts on four opportunities this week.

This is the fifth weekly award for the Highlanders this season and the first one for Simpson. This is the first freshman of the week award for the Highlanders and also the first position player to win an award this season.

The Highlanders are currently preparing for a weekend double header at Virginia. First pitch is scheduled for May 3rd with the first pitch coming around 1:05 p.m. for game one. Both games will be streamed on ACCNX.
