SOFTBALL SPOTLIGHT: MEGAN HONAKER
In anticipation for the start of the 2013 softball season, we will feature all 17 Highlanders in a question and answer session.
Freshman catcher Megan Honaker hails from Damascus, Va. and will wear No. 1 during her rookie campaign.
Honaker was the 2012 Region C and Hogoheegee District Player of the Year and helped Holston High School to three straight Group A State Championship game appearances (73-8 record). In addition, she was named the 2012 Joe Preston Female Athlete of the Year and Bristol Herald Courier Catcher of the Year. Off the field, Megan earned an associate's degree from Virginia Highlands Community College and was Holston's co-valedictorian.
Radford opens the season on the road when it travels to Chapel Hill, N.C. on Feb. 13 for a twinbill at No. 21/22 North Carolina. First pitch is schedule for 2:00 p.m.
What is the team goal for 2013?
To win the Big South and go on to Regionals.
Do you have any individual goals for the season?
My individual goal is to steal 25 or more bases.
What was the key factor in your recruitment that led you to Radford and the Highlander softball program?
Radford had two main things I wanted in a college, an outstanding nursing program and softball team. Just seemed like the perfect fit for me.
Who is the most influential person in your life and why?
My Grandma, she is a three- time breast cancer survivor, is in her nineties, and still comes to every game she can. She is my only living grandparent so she is very dear to me and has always inspired me to never give up; if she can defeat cancer three times, I can defeat the little problems I have in my life.
What is your favorite kind of candy?
Candy Corn
Who are your favorite professional athletes?
Monica Abbott and Rickie Fowler
What did you want to grow-up to be when you were a kid?
A waitress and an astronaut
Do you have any superstitions, on or off the playing field?
Can't cross the bats and I always pray during the national anthem.
One thing most people don't know about you?
I was a cheerleader, dancer, and did pageants. I have an allergic reaction sometimes to cold like ice packs and cold wind/water.
What would be your ideal career?
To be a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner at St. Judes Hospital
If you were stranded on an island and were allowed 3 things (non electronic) what would they be?
A boat,(I'm getting off that island) a fishing pole(Gotta eat), and a frying pan (used for protection and cooking).
With a long winter break, what did you do (softball and non-softball related) during that time?
I helped coach JV cheerleading, did my softball workouts, went to Gatlinburg for TCTC (TN Christian Teen Conference), went to an indoor waterpark for New Years, watched an RU basketball game for my Mom's birthday, and ate a lot. Haha (:
