BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Radford's opening road contest in Big South play ended in a 1-1 tie Saturday night at Campbell. Bernardo Ulmo put the Highlanders in the lead in the 51st minute with his fourth goal of the season, but the Camels tied it in the 60th minute and neither team was able to score from that point.
The Highlanders (4-4-3, 1-1-1) twice nearly ended the match in the second overtime period. Jamie Summers headed a ball off the crossbar less than a minute into the final extra period. RU earned a corner kick on the play, and on that ensuing corner, Luis Grande again put a header off the pipe to no avail.
"Campbell is a talented and well coached group, and this was another tight conference game," Radford head coach Marc Reeves said. "I thought we were unlucky not to get all three points from tonight especially with the way we pushed in the OT periods. As you can see from the various results today and early conference games, the league is going to be very tight, and we have to keep battling away each and every game."
Ulmo gave RU the lead on an assist by Grande and moved into a tie for 8th in the league in goals scored for the season. His right-footed blast to the low left corner of the net beat Campbell's keeper.
The Camels (2-6-3, 2-0-1), however, drew the equalizer from Jhuvon Frances snuck a shot past RU keeper, Dane Wilson, to the lower right corner of the goal nine minutes following to set up the draw.
Statistically, the teams played a fairly even match. Campbell recorded a 17-15 edge in total shots, but the Highlanders tallied more on frame, 5-3.
Radford next travels to nationally-ranked Coastal Carolina on Sunday, October 20 for a 2:00 p.m. start.
"I am excited for the week off practice and preparation to take on an excellent team in Coastal," Reeves said.
