
WOMEN’S TENNIS PREPARES FOR ITA ATLANTIC REGIONAL

RADFORD, Va. – Taylor Newman and Gemma Valls will represent Radford women's tennis at the ITA Atlantic Regional hosted by the University of Virginia, Oct. 18-22, at the Snyder Tennis Center in Charlottesville, Va.
Competition commences Friday at 9:30 a.m. with singles action in the qualifying draw. Valls will go against Virginia Tech's Tea Ivanovic. The winner advances to Saturday's main draw, which begins at 1 p.m. Already in the round of 64, Newman is matched against Lana Robins of George Washington.
The main draw for doubles starts Friday at 3 p.m. Radford's duo of Newman and Valls battles Old Dominion's Ingrid Vojcinakova and Marijana Novakovic in the round of 64.
RU is one of 25 teams represented at the regional. Joining the Highlanders are Delaware, Georgetown, George Washington, Howard, James Madison, Liberty, Longwood, Marshall, Maryland, Morgan State, Navy, Norfolk State, Old Dominion, Penn State, Pittsburgh, Richmond, St. Joseph's, Temple, University of Maryland-Baltimore County, VCU, Virginia, Virginia Tech, West Virginia and William & Mary.
In all, 88 singles players and 48 doubles pairs are battling for berths to the ITA National Indoor Championships, which are set for Nov. 7-10 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y. To qualify, individuals must win their respective draws. The ITA Atlantic Regional is one of 24 championships for NCAA Division I men's and women's tennis teams taking place this month at campuses across the country.
