AYANA AVERY HAULS IN FIRST BIG SOUTH PLAYER OF THE WEEK

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Junior shooting guard Ayana Avery has been named the Big South Conference Women's Basketball Choice Hotels Player of the Week as announced by league officials Tuesday morning. It is her first career player of the week accolade.

"Ayana has had a great start to our season and played well in our home opener against Emory & Henry," head coach Mike McGuire said. "Ayana is learning that she can be a versatile scorer for us this season. This type of recognition is also credit to our entire team for finding Ayana at the right times in our offense and making the unselfish play."

Avery led three Highlanders with double-doubles by knocking down 7-of-13 (.538) from the hardwood on her way to a career-high-tying 21 points. Of her seven made shots, six were from distance, which are a career high.

The Cleveland, N.C. native, who is already 10th all-time in 3-pointers made in program history (98), connected on 6-of-9 (.667) from downtown. She also added a career-high 11 rebounds, three assists and two steals.

Avery and the Highlanders play their second home game of the season tonight (Tuesday) against Lynchburg College. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. inside the Dedmon Center. Live stats and live video will be available.
