ROUND 1  |  INDIVIDUAL

NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. –
Behind a 3-under 281 and two Highlanders in the top-5 of the individual standings, the Radford men's golf team opened with a three-shot lead following Sunday's first round of the Bash at the Beach being played at The Surf Golf and Beach Club and hosted by Appalachian State.

In relation to par, the Highlanders carded their second-best ledger of the season. Their 3-under-par total was only two shots shy of the season-best mark of 5-under-par set in the second round of the ODU/OBX Invitational.

Lurking three strokes behind is Jacksonville. Sparked by two of their golfers tied for eighth, the Dolphins brought in an even-par 284. James Madison (286) is in third after receiving two sub-par rounds from Rich Leeper, who is alone in second at 4-under 67, and Trey Smith (69).

Led by first-round leader McKay Tye's 6-under 65, High Point is in fourth at 288. One shot behind and in fifth place is Northeastern State at 289.

However, the day belonged to Radford as it had three rounds at even par or better, including two rounds in the 60s for the first time this season. Out in front for the Highlanders is Callum Tarren, who logged a 3-under 68 and is tied for third. With his third sub-par round of the season, Tarren is only three shots off the pace.

Joining his teammate in red figures, freshman Conner Hayden carded a season-best 2-under 69 and is tied for fifth through 18 holes. The Chilhowie, Va. native has charted three sub-par rounds so far this season.

Entering the tournament as the 210th-ranked golfer in the nation according to Golfstat, Weston Eklund fired his 10th round of even par or better this season with a 71 and is tied for 12th. Tanner Carbaugh is tied for 20th after posting a 2-over 73, while Matt Harman is tied for 39th at 4-over 75.

The Highlanders will look to stretch their lead when they tee off Monday morning at 9:00 with Jacksonville and JMU.
