MEN’S TENNIS ENDS TEXAS TRIP WITH 4-0 DEFEAT

HOUSTON, Texas – Facing a nationally-ranked opponent for the second time this season, Radford fell 4-0 to No. 53 Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Saturday morning at the Jake Hess Tennis Stadium in a men's tennis nonconference clash.

The Highlanders (3-7) were looking to upset their opposition for the second time in four years. RU and the Islanders (8-6) last met Jan. 23, 2009, with the Highlanders edging 75th-ranked Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, 4-3.

Saturday's matchup, which featured two squads that have made the NCAA Tournament a combined nine times, began with the Islanders taking the doubles point for a 1-0 lead heading into singles action.

After dropping the decision on court one, Radford looked to Patrick O'Keefe and Randall Carter for the answer. The tandem was locked in a tight battle with Matt Westmoreland and Andrew Maingot. The grueling match went into a tiebreaker where the Islanders prevailed to take a 9-8 win to clinch the doubles point.

Playing together for the first time this season, Nicholas Sayer and Joe Mills were tied at 7 with Odon Barta and Guillaume Rauseo when doubles play was called.

Things would not get any easier for Sayer, as the junior faced his third nationally-ranked foe this season in No. 103 Peter Nagy. The Islander prevailed 6-4, 6-2 to push his team's lead to 2-0.

Texas A&M-Corpus Christi clinched the dual with victories on courts six and three. Thomas Dehaen and Stijn Meulemans were leading at No. 2 and No. 4 singles, respectively, when the match was decided.

Up next for the Highlanders is their home opener with Dartmouth on Friday, March 22 at 2:30 p.m.
