RADFORD, Va. – Looking to peak at the right time, Radford heads to the Palmetto State for the 2013 Big South Women's Golf Championship presented by Musco Sports Lighting beginning Sunday, April 14 at The Patriot Club in Ninety Six, S.C.
Hosting the conference tournament for the sixth consecutive year and seventh overall, The Patriot Club welcomes the league's nine women's golf programs to the par 72, 6,009-yard layout designed by Davis Love III.
“Our girls worked extremely hard on their games the last couple weeks,” commented head coach Jeff Beeler. “We are excited about the challenge awaiting us there.”
Paired with High Point and Presbyterian College, the Highlanders tee-off beginning at 8:00 a.m. Pairings were determined based on rankings released by Golfstat this week.
No. 34 Campbell enters the championship as the highest-ranked squad, followed by No. 39 Coastal Carolina. The Camels and the Chanticleers finished first and second, respectively, in this event last year. Rounding out the top-three teams is Longwood, which is ranked 112th in the nation. Campbell, Coastal Carolina and the Lancers get their rounds underway at 9:40 a.m.
The middle pairing includes Gardner-Webb (ranked 125th), Winthrop (ranked 133) and Charleston Southern (ranked 147th). Their tee time is set for 8:50 a.m.
“Many don't realize how strong our conference is in golf [both men's and women's],” Beeler said. “To have two nationally-ranked teams inside the top-40 is incredible.”
Alexandra Austin leads RU with a 77 scoring average, which ranks 14th in the league. The sophomore has turned in five top-10 finishes, including a career-best showing (tied for second) at the season-opening Bison Intercollegiate. In addition, Austin logged a career-best, 36-hole total of 3-over-par 147 at the Lady Bison Spring Classic to tie for third.
Hayley Hammond has recorded two top-10 performances, including a season-best showing (tied for fourth) at the Low Country Intercollegiate. The redshirt junior's 78.7 scoring average ranks second on the team. Paige Reese is right behind with an 80.9 average. Her season-best, 11th-place finish came at the Highlander Invitational.
Kirsty Condon has the fourth-best scorecard on the team at 82.2 per round. The junior carded a career-best, 54-hole 235 at the Bison Intercollegiate to tie for 17th. Katie Parrott rounds out the lineup with her 85.2 scoring average. The freshman tied for 23rd at the Highlander Invitational for her season-best performance.
The three-day, 54-hole tournament will be played April 14-16 and is free to the public. In addition, fans can follow the action online via Golfstat's live scoring feature. The 2013 champion will receive the Big South's automatic berth to the NCAA Regionals.
Meanwhile, the Big South Women's Golf Awards Banquet will be held Monday, April 15 at 6:30 p.m. The 2013 annual award winners and all-conference teams will be announced at that time. The top-five finishers, in addition to ties, in the championship will comprise the all-championship team.
