RADFORD, Va. – The first day of the Big South Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships was highlighted by personal-records and top-10 finishes for the Radford track and field team.
“Overall a good start for us today,” said head coach Brent Chumbley. “A little bad luck with three, ninth place finishes, but great efforts all around. Tomorrow is a big day with a lot of qualifying.”
Senior Phillip Hovatter currently sits in third place in the decathlon after five events with 3,483 points. He will finish the remaining events tomorrow. Chumbley went on to say, “Phillip had a great start in the decathlon and is in great shape going into day two.”
Senior Curtis Hodge brought home sixth place in the hammer throw after a toss of 54.36m while junior Garrett Knudson took ninth with a personal-record distance of 47.59m.
Sophomore Chris Henry added a sixth place in the long jump after a leap of 7.10m. Classmate Travis Hudson took home ninth in the javelin with a throw of 49.43m.
Sophomore Ryan Farnan finished with a personal-record 31:45.90 while placing ninth in the 10,000m.
For the women, freshman Ashlen Veatch took fifth place in the hammer throw after a personal-record toss of 53.28m. Chumbley added, “I think Ashlen did a great job competing today with several PRs in the hammer.”
Junior Kaleice Green added a seventh place in the long jump after a leap of 5.39m while freshman Lora Wilson finished tenth after a personal-record jump of 5.22m.
RU track and field will get back at it tomorrow for day two of the Big South Championships. The first event of the day is scheduled to go off at 9:00 a.m.
