RADFORD, Va. – After numerous records being broken during the outdoor season, Radford track and field aims to continue its performance this weekend as the Highlanders travel to Lynchburg, Va. for the Big South Conference Outdoor Championships held at Metthes-Hopkins Track Complex at Liberty University, April 18-20.
The men are looking to build upon their sixth place finish last spring while the women strive to improve from their tenth place finish. Last April, the Highlanders tallied five all-conference performances at the Big South Championships.
SPRINTS / RELAYS
Athletes to Watch… Senior Kaise White leads the men's squad in the sprints as a three-time all-conference selection in the 400m and an all-conference honoree in the 4x100 and 4x400m relays. White currently holds the second fastest time in the Big South in the 400m at 47.80 seconds.
Sophomore Joseph Betts currently holds the Radford record in the 200m with a time of 21.26 seconds. He has the fifth fastest time this spring in the Big South at 21.53 seconds and the ninth best in the 100m at 10.78 seconds.
On the women's side, junior Lakei Crews will be relied on, as she owns two of the top-10 times in the 100m at Radford. Senior Kayla Christian and junior Kaleice Green look to make an impact in the sprints at the Big South Championships.
HURDLES
Athletes to Watch… Sophomore Vincent Wyatt was an all-conference selection during his freshman year in the 110m hurdles after posting, then a Radford record time of 14.01 seconds. This spring, Wyatt shattered that mark with a time of 13.81 seconds during the first meet of the outdoor season. Wyatt now holds every top-10 mark, and has clocked in under 14 seconds three times this spring.
Juniors Amber Church and Courtni Pannell led the women in these events. Pannell was an all-conference selection in 2011 in the 100m hurdles while Church and Pannell own eight (four each) of the top-10 marks in the 100m hurdles. Church currently has the tenth fastest time in the conference at 14.84 seconds.
DISTANCE
Athletes to Watch… This distance group has excelled during the spring season with two long-standing RU records being broken. Sophomore Ryan Farnan broke the 5000m record that stood for nine years with a time of 14:48.06 while classmate Teresa Williamson took down a 12-year-old record in the 1500m after clocking in at 4:39.11.
Junior Brian Gorwitz will likely compete in the 5000m and 10,000m run. Gorwitz currently holds the fourth fastest time in the Big South in the 1500m at 3:50.09.
THROWS
Athletes to Watch… Senior Justin Smith leads the men's after squad along with classmate Cutris Hodge. Smith currently holds the third best toss in the shot put at 15.95m while junior Garrett Knudson has the seventh best distance at 15.42m. Hodge has the third best distance in the conference in the hammer throw at 58.83m while Knudson has the ninth best toss at 45.11m.
On the women's side, freshman Ashlen Veatch is currently fourth best in the Big South with a toss of 52.03m in the hammer throw. Sophomore Jazmine Banks will also look to make an impact in the shot put as her 12.55m ranks ninth in the conference.
JUMPS / MULTI'S
Athletes to Watch… Senior Phillip Hovatter is the record holder in the decathlon with 5,990 points set at the Big South Championships two years as he redshirted last year. This season, Hovatter has a high of 5,857 points, which ranks him fourth in the Big South.
For the jumps, sophomore Chris Henry leads the Highlanders with a leap of 7.12m in the long jump, which ranks fourth in the Big South, while freshman Cory Dunn ranks tenth in the triple jump with a distance of 13.35m. Junior Josiah Brunson has a top-10 height at Radford in the pole vault at 3.95m.
For the women, sophomore Jamiecka Baker will lead the Highlanders as her 12.07m in the triple jump ranks third in the Big South and ninth in RU school-history. Green holds a top-10 distance in the long jump at RU with a leap of 5.55m, which is also the fifth best in the conference. Sophomore Kayla Burd's 2.75m clearance will lead Radford in the Big South Championships this weekend.
