MEN’S GOLF TIED FOR FOURTH AFTER DAY ONE OF BSC CHAMPIONSHIP

NINETY SIX, S.C. –
The Radford men's golf team opened with a 304 Sunday at the Big South Men's Golf Championship and is tied for fourth with Campbell following 18 holes of action. The three-day 54-hole event is being played at The Patriot Club at Grand Harbor (par 72, 7,120 yards).
 
The Highlanders are 10 shots back of 39th-ranked Liberty, which fired a 6-over-par 294 to claim the first-round lead. The Flames are two swings clear of 52nd-ranked Coastal Carolina, which turned in an 8-over-par 296. Winthrop is third at 11-over-par 299, five strokes ahead of RU and Campbell.
 
Freshman Conner Hayden led the Highlanders on day one. The Chilhowie, Va. native was solid in his first trip to the conference championship as he logged 15 pars en route to a 2-over-par 74. He enters the second round tied for eighth.
 
Two strokes behind Hayden is Tanner Carbaugh. The sophomore charted 13 pars to tie for 15th at 4-over-par 76. Behind four birdies, redshirt senior Weston Eklund carded a 5-over-par 77 and is tied for 24th.
 
Also tying for 24th and charting a team-best five birdies was Matt Harman. The junior went out in 4-over-par 40 before rallying to shoot 1-over-par on the back nine. The Roanoke, Va. native caught fire late in his round as he birdied three of his final five holes.
 
Despite recording three birdies, junior Callum Tarren returned an 85 to the clubhouse and is in 48th place.
 
Liberty's Max McKay fired a 2-under-par 70 to grab the overnight lead. Lurking one shot back is 38th-ranked Sebastian Soderberg. Winthrop's Cameron Bell and the Flames' Chase Marinell (ranked 76th nationally) are tied for third at even-par 72.

Radford is paired with Campbell and Presbyterian College for the second round which begins Tuesday at 8:30 a.m. off the par-4 first hole.
 
The winner of the conference championship will receive the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Men's Golf Regionals, May 16-18, at six select locations around the country.
 
Following the conclusion of the final round, the Big South Conference will announce its annual award winners (all-conference, Player of the Year, Coach of the Year and Freshman of the Year) at a special awards ceremony.
