CROSS COUNTRY GEARS UP FOR ASHEVILLE XC CARNIVAL

RADFORD, Va. – The Radford men's and women's cross country teams travel to Asheville, N.C. this weekend for the Asheville Cross Country Carnival hosted by UNC Asheville. The meet will take place at Asheville Christian Academy beginning at 9 a.m. Saturday.

The event will feature men's and women's collegiate races, along with a high school race. Collegiate teams participating alongside RU will be Appalachian State, Charleston Southern, Western Carolina, Wofford, Winthrop, Limestone, and Lees-McRae.

Both squads are looking to harness the momentum garnered at the UVA Duals two weeks ago. Though an unofficial race, it was great practice before their first competitive timed race.

Head coach Mackenzie Wartenberger looks forward to her women's team running the championship 5k distance.

"We've seen some great work in training across the board from the ladies, and this weekend's meet will be all about running as a team and establishing our competitive mindset."

In addition, the team will be welcoming back junior Teresa Williamson, who trained through the opener.

The men's team will run a 6k, a shorter distance than what the pack normally races. Wartenberger says this gives the men a chance to push their pace.

"They've been running beautifully as a team over the past few weeks, I hope to see some aggressive performances."

Junior Ryan Farnan, who also trained through the opener, will be joining the team this weekend.

"This will be our last chance to get the kinks worked out before we preview the Big South Championship course in Buena Vista, Va. in a week," Wartenberger says.

The races commence at 9 a.m. Saturday with the men's collegiate race, followed by the women's collegiate at 9:45 a.m. The high school race will follow shortly after, and the awards ceremony will take place at 11:45 a.m.
