BIRDIE BINGE IGNITES AFTERNOON SURGE FOR MEN’S GOLF AT VCU SHOOTOUT

ROUNDS 1-2

MANAKIN-SABOT, Va. – Behind a barrage of birdies, the Radford men's golf team rebounded from a 300 in the morning round to post a 6-under-par 282 in the afternoon. The Highlanders are fourth following Monday's 36 holes at the Golf Galaxy VCU Shootout contested at the par 72, 6,955-yard Hermitage Country Club.

By carving out a whopping seven birdies in the afternoon session, Callum Tarren was able to chart a season-low, 5-under-par 67 to fuel RU. With his sub-par round, Tarren surged from a t-36 position to tied for seventh at 1-under-par 143 (76-67).

Joining Tarren in red figures Monday afternoon were Conner Hayden and Tanner Carbaugh, who both logged 1-under-par 71s. The duo is tied for 22nd at 2-over-par 146 after both tallied 75s earlier in the day.

Ryan Rettberg is tied for 25th at 3-over-par 147 (74-73) and Nick Brediger is tied for 45th at 152 (79-73). Rettberg and Brediger combined to record 12 birdies on the day. Competing as an individual, Matt Harman returned a 154 (74-80) to the clubhouse and is tied for 56th.

Virginia Tech, the defending champion of the event, also made a charge in the afternoon. Following a 1-under-par 287 in the morning (which was good for third place), the Hokies shaved seven shots off that figure to tally an 8-under-par 280 in the afternoon.

Their 36-hole, 9-under-par 567 is two swings clear of Iowa State, which led after the morning 18 at 6-under-par 282. The Cyclones returned a 1-under-par 287 in the afternoon. Richmond is third at 4-over-par 580 (286-294), two strokes ahead of the Highlanders' 582 (300-282). Radford's second-round ledger was the second-best total during the afternoon wave. Only Virginia Tech fired a better round (280).

Host VCU and former conference rival Old Dominion are tied for fifth at 586, while Maryland (590), UNC Greensboro (594), James Madison (595) and Central Connecticut State (613) round out the top 10.

The Hokies' Scott Vincent, who carded a 7-under-par 137 (69-68), leads the 77-player field by four shots over teammate Bryce Chalkley, Iowa State's Collin Foster and JMU's Ryan Cole.

An 8:45 a.m. shotgun start is set for Tuesday's final round. Radford will be paired with VCU and ODU for the final 18 holes. Live scoring will be provided by Golfstat.
