TWO SUB-PAR ROUNDS PROPEL MEN’S GOLF TO THIRD AT VCU SHOOTOUT

ROUND 3

MANAKIN-SABOT, Va. – Callum Tarren and Ryan Rettberg fired 2-under-par 70s to lift the Radford men's golf team to a third-place finish following Tuesday's final round at the Golf Galaxy VCU Shootout contested at the par 72, 6,955-yard Hermitage Country Club.

For the second straight round, Tarren dipped into red figures to tie for fifth. The senior finished at 3-under-par 213 (76-67-70). His final round included three birdies in a seven-hole stretch.

Rettberg put together a career-best showing just outside the Commonwealth's capital. Standing at 1-over-par through eight holes in his final round, the redshirt junior reeled off an eagle and two birdies, against one bogey, to finish with a personal-best, 2-under-par 70. He also posted career marks for best finish (T15) and best 54 holes (217).

Conner Hayden tied for 21st at 3-over-par 219 (75-71-73). One stroke behind was Tanner Carbaugh, who tallied a 4-over-par 220 (75-71-74) to tie for 25th.

Nick Brediger tied for 51st at 228 (79-73-76), while Matt Harman, who competed as an individual, tied for 59th at 233 (74-80-79).

By placing three of its golfers in the top four of the 77-player field, Virginia Tech ran away with the team title by recording a 23-under-par 841 (287-280-274). The Hokies' 14-under-par 274 was the low round of the tournament.

First-round leader Iowa State secured second at 1-under-par 863 (282-287-294). The Cyclones edged Radford (869) by six shots. Richmond was fourth at 873, followed by Old Dominion (875), Maryland (879), VCU (880), UNC Greensboro (883), James Madison (891), George Mason (914), Central Connecticut State (926) and George Washington (940).

Scott Vincent, who fired a 10-under-par 206 (69-68-69), edged teammate Bryce Chalkley by four shots to claim the individual title. Richmond's Keegan Hoff, who played as an individual, was third at 5-under-par 211 (70-72-69). Tech's Trevor Cone was fourth at 4-under-par 212 (71-75-66), followed by Tarren and Maryland's Ben Warnquist at 213.

Up next for the Highlanders is a Big South tri-match against High Point and Gardner-Webb on Oct. 5 at The Patriot Golf Club in Ninety Six, S.C. The layout serves as the host site for April's 2014 Big South Men's Golf Championship.
